Maslow, You Missed Entertainment Need, Boy!!

Dear Abraham Maslow,

I want to humbly propose an improvisation for your model for motivation. I feel there is a level missing, as in one important need is missed from “Hierarchy of Needs”. Let me put my point forward, first, by asking few questions.

• Why has technology integrated in our life so vastly? Why every common man wants a smart phone, a laptop or a pad?
• What do Google trends say about our searches?
• Why social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, Pintrest are so popular?
• Why is having a TV in the family so necessary?
• Why we formed communities? Why the first man started interacting? Interdependence, yes, but what kept them hooked?

The answer to all above is Entertainment + Information, clearly more of first & less of the later.

We are hungry for entertainment. We think about entertainment all the time. That is why, as soon as we wake up in the morning we put our gadgets like mobile phones, TVs, music players to action. We want to be entertained whole day.

We work to afford better Entertainment.Go ahead, think about that. Our desires for an exotic vacation, better dining & winning, a better music system, play station, flat TVs, weekly movies; some would say it is related to esteem needs, but No!! We want to see that hot woman surfing on the rushing waves of the sea on that big flat LCD, we want to experience the Harley Davidson ride.

We seek entertainment in our work. Tea breaks, face book breaks, Whatsapp pings, office parties, or that serious brain storming session all are means of entertainment. Actually we want more breaks, more distraction than work.

Histrory: From hunting for recreation, to the fights of gladiators, from music and dances in the courts, art & architecture to folksongs & folklores, from festivals to the modern age media, everything condenses my belief in one statement:-

“Entertainment is an essential need.”

So, where should we put Entertainment in the “Hierarchy of Needs“?

I say, in the second level, before the Safety needs. Don’t agree? Try remembering the first memories of your childhood, Mom’s lullaby? It made us relaxed and sleep for years.

The point I am putting here is, right from our childhood the things we desired most is in some form of entertainment after fulfilling our need for food, sheltered etc (physiological needs),

Since then, movies, sports, food, travel, books everything we are buying is more or less based on our need for pleasure. Come on, don’t we want to buy that new more expensive Iphone to play Temple Run, watch Youtube video of PSY – Gangnam style & listen to Adele on go? Well, most of us would say yes, and others would be lying.

Now that we know entertainment is so important in an human’s life,

Time for marketeers to focus more on entertainment.
